If your NIIMBOT printer feeds paper but the labels come out blank, the roll is almost certainly loaded upside down. Direct thermal printing only works on the coated side, so if that side faces away from the printhead you get perfectly blank labels every time. Open the compartment, flip the roll so the sticker side faces down, leave a few millimetres of paper poking out of the tear-off slot, and close the lid. That fixes the large majority of blank-print cases. If it doesn't, work through the checks below in order.
1. Check the roll is the right way up
Slide the lid open, drop the roll in with the print side facing down, and make sure the leading label sticks out of the tear-off opening before you close it. Two details matter: if no paper is left outside the slot, the feed can misbehave; and if the roll is reversed, the printer will keep feeding and keep printing nothing. This is the same across the D11, D110 and D101, the B1 and B21 family, and the wider B31. Our printer operation guide has the loading diagrams per model.
2. Turn up the print density
If prints are faint rather than blank, this is usually density, not a fault. Open the NIIMBOT app, connect to the printer, and raise the print concentration setting. Thicker or synthetic label stock needs more heat than standard paper labels, so a setting that works on one roll can look washed out on another.
3. Clean the printhead
Adhesive residue and dust on the printhead show up as blank patches, white streaks down the label, or text that fades across the roll. Power the printer off, let it cool, and wipe the printhead gently with a cotton bud lightly dampened with isopropyl alcohol. Let it dry fully before reloading. Doing this every few rolls prevents most print-quality complaints.
4. Use genuine label rolls
Unbranded rolls are the second most common cause of blank or patchy output — the thermal coating is often thinner or applied unevenly, and they lack the RFID chip that lets the printer identify the label size automatically. Match your model to the right range: D11 & D110 labels, D101 labels, B1 & B21 labels, B31 labels or N1 labels.
5. Clear labels need a setting change
Transparent labels are a special case. If your printer cannot detect a clear roll, open the app and go to Me → My Device → Paper Certification, choose Transparent, then restart the printer. The printer is not faulty — it simply cannot see the gaps between clear labels until you tell it what it is loaded with.
6. Recalibrate the paper feed
If labels print but drift off-centre, or the printer ejects a blank label between every print, run the paper feed calibration in the app under Me → My Device, selecting your paper type. This re-teaches the sensor where each label starts.
7. Check the basics
Charge the battery — low power causes weak or partial prints before the printer shuts off. Update both the app and the printer firmware. And confirm you are connected to the right device; if pairing is the problem, our phone connection guide covers that properly.
